The University of Vienna was founded in 1365 and is thus one of the oldest universities in Europe. Today, the University of Vienna is staffed by over 8,000 employees, of whom 6,200 are scientists and other academic scholars. More than 72,000 students from 134 countries foster intellectual and cultural exchange in the city of Vienna. The Department of Social Studies of Science has become an independent research and teaching department in 2004. The master program is situated in the interdisciplinary field of Social Studies of Science and Technology (STS), a rather young research field which aims at understanding the complex and multi-layered interaction processes between techno-science and society at large. On the one hand, it investigates how social, economic, political or ideological contexts influence the way techno-scientific knowledge is produced, and thus how society shapes science and technology. On the other hand, it analyses the impacts of scientific and technological developments on the way we think, structure and live in contemporary societies. To investigate these issues, STS as a research field draws on methods and theoretical approaches from different social science disciplines such as sociology, political sciences, communication studies, or cultural anthropology.
